Safety professionals have known for years that “complacency is a silent killer.” They have also suspected that complacency was a contributing factor in almost every unintentional injury or incident. But they didn’t really know what to do about it other than to put up signs that said, “Think Safety.” Unfortunately, from a neuroscience perspective, it is impossible to stop people from becoming complacent once they are competent. And we need competence especially for high-risk tasks (operating a crane, driving a forklift, welding, etc.).

But, even more unfortunately, many (most) companies do not know what to do to help their employees deal with complacency, which leads to mind not on task/risk.

In this session, participants will learn the neuroscience behind complacency, the two stages of the complacency continuum, and how critical decisions are compromised by human factors in the second stage. Participants will also learn what people need to do to prevent complacency from causing injuries and incidents, such as building “attentive” habits, looking for risk patterns in others, analyzing close calls and small errors to prevent agonizing over big ones, and using “self-triggering” skills to deal with rushing, frustration, and fatigue which, when combined with complacency, can cause fatalities (e.g., falling asleep while driving). In addition, the session will explore how concepts like fail-safe can help compensate for complacency leading to mind not on task.

Webinar will highlight:

  • Understand the neuroscience behind complacency and why it cannot be eliminated once competence is achieved
  • Recognize the two stages of the complacency continuum and how human factors impact critical decision-making
  • Learn practical skills to prevent complacency-related injuries, including attentive habits, self-triggering skills, and the use of fail-safe concepts
